On Tuesday, July 13, 2010, United Way of Southwest Georgia was very pleased to donate $12,000 on behalf of the MillerCoors Foundation to Dougherty County Family Literacy Connection. Family Literacy Connection was founded in 2002 and works by giving support to families as a whole.
In order to accomplish this, children under the age of eight years are able to participate in a four component literacy program while their mothers and fathers work to obtain their GED’s through learning activities and interactive software. Parenting classes are also a part of the adult instruction. Each year, approximately 50 families are served through Family Literacy Connection.
MillerCoors has been a significant donor to United Way for many years. The donation was obtained through a grant written by United Way to help focus in on the Community Impact Model in the area of Income: Empowering Individuals and Families towards self-sufficiency. United Way is very happy to be able to help such a worthy cause!
